For 55 years, The League of Friends of the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital has helped provide care for patients of the hospital, while supporting patient relatives and staff.
The League of Friends has 4 shops, run by volunteers, selling food, drinks, and more to fundraise for the RSH and help supply hospital patients with necessary medical equipment.
The Friends also hold charity fundraising events, and have contributed a total of over £15 million to the hospital.
The “Shrewsbury Hospital Group League of Friends” is established, affiliated with the National League of Friends, and encompasses the trio of local hospitals in Shrewsbury and Shelton Hospital.
The first shop opens in South Hospital, raising £28 in its first day.
After Prince Charles opens the new hospital, the League of Friends of the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital is formed.
The Friends Group receives The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
With four shops up and running, the Friends are able to raise over £2 million for the hospital in the span of two years.
The Friends raise £150,000, bringing three new life-saving ultrasound machines for critically ill patients into the hospital.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the League of Friends shop closes its doors to the public, but is still open to hospital staff and allows them to order food hampers. In July of 2020, the outpatient shop reopens to patients and visitors.
An open garden charity event hosted by the League of Friends raises more than £10,000 for 10 special syringe pumps to help with end of life patient care.
Jill Wellings, 83, a member of the League of Friends at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital since 1966, retires, leaving a legacy of community service, and receiving the hospital’s Long Service Award.
The Friends present the RSH with over £300,000 worth of medical equipment, including arrhythmia monitor and A&E communicators. They also bring in the “Optos California ultra-wide field retinal imaging system,” a state-of-the-art retinal scanner.
In one year, the Friends raise £45,000 for the Maxillofacial Head and Neck Cancer Unit, £48,000 for Radiographer workstations and £16,000 for Cardio Respiratory Equipment.
