League of Friends of Newport (Shropshire) Cottage Care Centre

Established in 1973 as a support group to the Cottage Hospital, and then to the Cottage Care Centre, the League of Friends of Newport Cottage Hospital is made up of members of the general public, with the goal to raise money for the care centre and the X-Ray unit. The centre operates as a day care facility for the elderly and for those living with dementia.

Most of the funds are raised through the charity shop, kept going by continued donations from the community in Newport, allowing the League of Friends of Newport Cottage Care Centre to continue its mission of supporting the Care Centre.

1973

The League of Friends is created.

1989

The Cottage Hospital closes but the League of Friends buy the premises and open it again as a Care Centre

2022

The League of Friends, in conjunction with 2 local GP practices and Newport Rotary Life, raised nearly £200,000 to fund a state-of-the-art X-Ray unit

2023

Friends donate funds to open a memorial garden dedicated to their long standing volunteer and former Chair, Margaret Woodcock. The garden will be used by the visitors to the centre.
