Formed in 1997 as Attend’s first surgery-based Friends group in Wales, Prestatyn Central Surgery Community League of Friends has built a lifeline for patients in the rural area by providing essential transport services. Recognising the challenges faced by patients without access to personal vehicles, especially for hospital appointments and specialist care as far as Liverpool and Wrexham, the Friends established a volunteer-led transport scheme that has become invaluable. Beyond transportation, the service offers companionship and moral support, with volunteers often accompanying patients to appointments and even assisting with errands like grocery shopping on the way home. Through regular fundraising efforts such as coffee mornings, raffles, and community events, the Friends cover costs to keep the scheme running. Over the years, their dedication has led to transporting patients more than 30,000 miles in six months and has earned them recognition as Regional Winners for Wales in the Sapphire 2000 Awards. This combination of transport and heartfelt community connection makes a profound difference in the lives of patients and their families.

The Friends of Prestatyn is formed.
The League launched the Home to Appointment Transport Scheme, managed by a dedicated Volunteer Transport Coordinator and supported by up to five volunteer drivers. Patients would contact the coordinator to schedule their appointment, which was logged in a transport diary. A driver was then assigned to pick up the patient, take them to their appointment, wait, and bring them back home. Patients contributed anonymous donations in envelopes. Drivers received a mileage allowance, while remaining funds were banked to support the scheme’s continued operation.

The Friends’ Home to Appointment Transport Scheme received the prestigious Sapphire Award from the National Association of Hospitals and Community Friends, recognising its outstanding service and dedication to patient support.
The League held a popular annual Christmas raffle, with volunteers selling tickets daily in the surgery’s waiting room. With over 20 prizes each year, the raffle raised over £1,000 annually.
The Prestatyn Festival of Christmas Trees, launched by the “Friends of the Parish Church” in Prestatyn, brought together over 30 beautifully decorated trees each year. Local groups, including primary schools, Sunday schools, youth organisations, environmental groups, and knitting clubs, contributed to this festive community event, showcasing their creativity and holiday spirit.
The League acquired a locking, folding bookcase on wheels, which they stocked with donated books. Volunteer booksellers would set up in the surgery waiting room, offering books to patients in exchange for donations. Many patients also contributed by bringing in their own books to support the stall.
When the League closed, it donated £12,500 to local first response teams and other League groups in the area, ensuring continued support for community health and emergency services.
