Since 1948,  the League of Hospital Friends (Mansfield and Sutton) have raised funds for and given support to three local hospitals: Kings Mill Hospital, Mansfield Community Hospital, and Millbrook Unit,  Sutton in Ashfield. In support of the work of these hospitals, the League’s main way of advancing health and saving lives for the aforementioned is fundraising. Fundraising takes many forms – from donations and In Memoriam collections to lunches, fashion shows, coffee mornings and quizzes. Much of their income is generated by three shops in two local towns, which offer a variety of goods including ladies’ fashions, children’s clothing, toys, china and other ceramic items, furniture, books and pictures.

This is the work of the fundraising committee and its myriads of helpers who work very hard behind the scenes to ensure that each event is such a success that future support is assured. Various items of technical medical equipment have been purchased as well as garden buildings, plants and tools for therapeutic purposes. Certain areas in the hospitals have been refurbished in order to make the ordeal of waiting less of a negative experience.

1948

The Mansfield branch of the League of Hospital Friends was established and in the many years of existence has raised over £3 million to support the work of originally the general hospital, but now extended to the King’s Mill and Mansfield Community Hospitals and two mental health centres.

2024

In 2024 the League provided the funds for a pain-relief machine and contributed £58,000 for a special Eye Clinic which has considerably reduced waiting times.

2024

Annually the League provides presents to patients who have to stay in hospital over the Christmas period, a gesture which is very much appreciated.

Stories from League of Hospital Friends Mansfield & Sutton

"I was a volunteer for many, many years, 50 odd years, and I took a role in as much as my life developed into the community, into the wider field, in as much as I was able to make my contribution in different ways."
